Bottom line this is a very well made, sturdy tool that has way more uses then you might think at first. As someone who does a lot of landscape work both lighting and irrigation, and is a lawn & garden nut, I should have purchased this tool a LONG time ago. Yes the price is high for “just a probe” but compared to what they sell basic steel probe rods for at the big box store, it’s worth it.

    P Hu

Overall I would say it’s much easier and renders a much better sample then using a shovel. I would definitely recommend this test probe for anybody wanting to do a core sample on their yard or garden and feel it works very well and overall is a good value for the money.

I used it to take about 30 to 35 cores from around my lawn. It was sturdy. It had no problem penetrating the soil. There were no edges sharp enough to cut my fingers when I scooped the soil out for collection. Nothing to complain about except the price seems a bit high for these in general.

I live in a condo community where generally there are lovely green lawns. But ours and the ones adjacent to it are terrible. I decided to get a soil test but needed the soil sampler in order to do a good job. The soil is mostly sand and clay. I could never have gotten the number of samples I got without the use of this excellent tool. Because of this tool I got the information about how bad the soil around my house is, and now the homeowners’ association is stirring itself to find a solution to this. They have talked about completely replacing the junk soil with rich, healthy soil

I am very happy to have purchased this sturdy soil sampler probe. We had an extensive landscaping job done earlier this year, with many 5 to 8 – foot shrubs planted a few months before a hot, dry summer. To preserve our investment ($$$$$), I had to make sure I was watering the plantings enough. Toward the end of the summer, I decided to invest in the soil probe. Sticking a screwdriver into the soil and feeling for moisture just wasn’t accurate. I should have bought the soil probe sooner! It is sturdy, and it gives a large soil sample (both in length and diameter). My only challenge is that, in some parts of the yard, I am not strong enough push the probe down easily. I plan to try using it with a rubber mallet to see if that helps. If not, I will consider it to be a tool to strengthen my own muscles. This is a very good product; well-made.

I have crappy soil, grass struggles in areas. I have been pulling plugs (some only 2 inches deep due to rocks and some 10 inches) and using a funnel to fill the holes holes with compost. I have at least 100 holes so far and this will be a summer long quest! The unit has done as I had hoped. I have banged a number of rocks and the cutting part of the tool shows little if any wear. The handle weld remains and the overall metal thickness is substantial.

I took 10 samples of soil in my front yard at various locations for analysis by TAMU. They require about a pint of dry dirt per sample. The rod went into the ground very easy on every probe and the middle 3″ were extracted. I will soon find out what nutrients are needed for bermuda growth this summer. This product delivers.

This product is awesome! I was able to go 9” into the soil without even realizing how deep I went. Pulls up perfect soil samples. I could see it being tough to go deep into clay soil. At a friend’s lawn, I was able to go 6” deep, but had to twist a little bit when I hit clay at 3”. One piece of advice: wait until the day after a rain to collect soil samples. It will be much easier.

I really like this soil sample tool a lot. I can tell that it will hold up for years to come. I also like how it’s nice and compact, nothing too big, so it’s easy to fit under the seat in the truck. Great product!!
